Them

Them  - Nightmare Fuel Day 3.

She entered the subway, which was clean and quiet, and sat. She pulled out her newspaper and started to read. Of course she noticed them. The stiff, starchy white canvases who existed. They existed,  nothing else. They worked, they earned, and then they went to wherever it was they lived. They were there today, just like every other day, just sitting there, the way she used to do. They were waiting to get where they were going and do whatever it is they do. They couldn't speak to one another, they couldn't speak to her for sure. She knew how they stared blankly out the windows and unblinkingly looked at her..and wondered.

After sitting for just a moment, glancing at the paper, one of them, sitting closest to her whispers, "did it hurt?" She didn't have to ask, she knew exactly what the question referred to.
She just shook her head the slightest bit, because it was also forbidden for her to speak to them. After a minute or two, again a faint whisper only she could hear, "were you scared?" This time she nodded slightly. When she was like them, she never had the courage to talk or question. She rode to her destination and exited the subway. She climbed the stairs and met the brilliant sun as she entered the sidewalk.

She felt she was being followed, but wasn't sure until she ducked into a book store, sure enough the same one who spoke to her on the subway waved to her. She was curious and went to see why this one was breaking all the rules.

Before she could ask, "Please tell me the process," it was a pleading request coming from this bold, stark white figure.

She thought for a moment and told her, 'they take you in a room where you choose a color: black, brown, yellow, tan, white there are so many colors. You are then shown a shape: big, tall, short, round, thin, wide, again so many shapes to choose from. Then the hardest room was to choose between different characteristics, traits, morals, ethics, religions...all of them so difficult to choose. You must be selective. Then there are the fun ones, which make us all different: hobbies, careers, personalities, eye color, shoe size and then, you are taken to a room so fabulous one could spend days in there just looking for the perfect packaging to wrap all their masterful creation in. This, this was the best room."

The one looked at her and said, I can't wait to go, I am so scared."

She smiled and told her, "yes, it is very scary to be an original!"
